Gnosticismens indflydelse er tydelig i al den l\u00e6re, der gik forud for den. Det gr\u00e6ske ord Gnosis betyder viden og visdom. Gnosticisme er et filosofisk og religi\u00f8st fors\u00f8g p\u00e5 at forklare ondskab og slippe af med det. Gnostikerne siger, at der er en h\u00f8jeste, uforst\u00e5elige Gud, fra hvem \u00e5nder kaldet ioner og s\u00f8jler opstod. Den dukkede op par for par, mand og kvinde, og aftog i guddommelighed, jo l\u00e6ngere den bev\u00e6gede sig v\u00e6k fra sin kilde, den H\u00f8jeste Gud. De sagde, at en af disse s\u00f8jler \u00f8nskede at h\u00e6ve sig til den h\u00f8jeste guds position, s\u00e5 han blev udst\u00f8dt fra den forst\u00e5elige verden.
