جاء في كتاب “سير القديسين” انه من طرابلس ولم يُعرف زمان استشهاده. يذكره السنكسار اليوناني ويعظمه لشجاعته. ما عُرف عنه انه تجاسر وقال لحاكم مقاطعة فينيقية: “ما هذا العمل الجنوني الذي باشرت به، يا حضرة الحاكم، ان تضطهد قطيع المسيح على هذا النحو!”. فثارت ثائرة الحاكم وأمر بتعذيبه. ولما رأى ان افسافيوس يسبّح الرب شاكرا متهللا كأن الألم يصيب شخصا آخر أمر بقطع رأسه. تعيّد له الكنيسة الارثوذكسية والكنيسة اللاتينية في 21 ايلول.
