عاش القديس دوروثاوس اسقف صور في زمان اضطهاد ديوكلسيانوس للمسيحيين حوالي سنة 304، وكان ملمّا بالكتاب المقدس إلماما كبيرا. اضطر الى الهرب من الاضطهاد فقصد اوديسوبوليس على البحر الاسود (فارنا الحالية) وبقي فيها حتى نهاية اضطهاد ليكينيوس سنة 320. بعد عودته الى صور رعى الكنيسة بسلام لسنوات عديدة.
ولما صار يوليانوس الجاحد امبراطورا (361) ابتدأ باضطهاد المسيحيين بشكل مخفي أولا. عاد الأسقف الشيخ الذي كان قد بلغ 107 سنوات الى اوديسوبوليس حيث تم توقيفه على يد جنود الامبراطور، وعُذّب عذابات مريرة دون اي احترام لشيخوخته. مات في العذاب وانضم الى الشهداء القديسين.
