لا نعرف شيئا كثيرا عن حياة القديس مرقس الذي عاش في القرن الخامس للميلاد. ترهّب بالقرب من أنقرة في آسيا الصغرى واختير رئيسًا للدير إلى ان قرر العزلة في البرية. كان محبًا للكد في كل شيء. بلغ أسمى درجات النسك والفضيلة. مما يؤكد ذلك أقواله المكتوبة الدالة على عمقها وشموليتها وعظم منفعتها.
ويُلقب القديس مرقس بصانع العجائب، كتب لمنفعة تلاميذه والعديد من المؤمنين كتابات قيمة جدا جرى القول بشأنها بين الرهبان شائعًا: بع كل شيء واشتر مرقس.بحسب المؤرخ نيكيفورس (1256-1335) الف اثنان وثلاثون كتابًا. لكن المؤلفات الموجودة بين أيدينا اليوم ثمانية أبرزها “الناموس الروحي”.

عندما تتذكر الله صلّ قدر استطاعتك حتى يذكرك الله عندما تقع في النسيان.
عندما يقرأ المتواضع الكتاب المقدس يفهمه موجهًا اليه لا إلى غيره.
ناموس الحرية يصبح معروفًا لدينا بالقراءة ويدرك بعمل الوصايا ويكمل بنعمة الله.
ان من يخفي مذمته ولومه للآخرين بمدحه إياهم ليس انسانًا طاهرًا.
ان من يظلمه الناس ويصبر بفرح يستره الله ويقيه من الخطيئة. وبدل الحزن يهبه التعزية.
اهتم بعيوبك لا بزلات قريبك فلا تفقد التمييز في ذهنك.
الانسان ينصح قريبه حسب معرفته الذاتية.لكن الكتاب المقدس يعرّف الانسان مشيئة الله.
عندما تمدح إنسانًا على عطية مادية، كفاعل خير، دون ان تشكر الله، إعلم انه سيبدو لك فيما بعد، رجلا شريرًا.
