Rimase orfano in seguito alla morte dei suoi genitori a causa della peste che colp\u00ec Costantinopoli e i suoi dintorni nell'anno 747 d.C. A quel tempo aveva tredici anni. Era legato a uno dei suoi zii, il ministro delle finanze dell'Impero. Ricevette un'ottima formazione e dimostr\u00f2 sorprendenti capacit\u00e0 nella gestione della cosa pubblica, tanto che molte persone illustri cercarono la sua compagnia. Quanto a lui, si alien\u00f2 dalle interazioni mondane e dai circoli lussuosi, e la sua mente vag\u00f2 verso chiese e monasteri, dove inizi\u00f2 ad andare a pregare ogni volta che ne aveva l'opportunit\u00e0. Quando il sentimento divino raggiunse il suo culmine e ogni splendore del mondo svan\u00ec dai suoi occhi, liber\u00f2 i suoi servi e distribu\u00ec le sue ricchezze ai poveri, dopo aver assicurato la dote alle sue due sorelle, e diresse lo sguardo verso il monte Olimpo in Bitinia, accompagnato da uno dei suoi servi. Quando raggiunsero una grotta, si fece tagliare i capelli dal suo servo, poi scambi\u00f2 i vestiti con lui, lo liber\u00f2 e si rec\u00f2 al Monastero dei Simboli. L\u00ec, il capo del monastero, Teoctisto, espresse delle riserve su di lui dopo averlo riconosciuto come uno dell'aristocrazia, abituato a modi vellutati. Ma presto cambi\u00f2 idea, soprattutto dopo averlo sottoposto alla prova e la genuinit\u00e0 del suo amore per il suo Signore, la fermezza della sua anima, l'intensit\u00e0 della sua risolutezza, la perfezione della sua ascesi divennero chiare ai suoi occhi. La sua et\u00e0, a quel tempo, era ventiquattro.<\/p>\n

Platone lo segu\u00ec in completa obbedienza al suo padre spirituale, accettando, con la sua benedizione, le pi\u00f9 severe fatiche ascetiche. Su questa via cammin\u00f2 con passo sicuro e fermo, assoggettando i desideri del suo corpo al pensiero di Cristo nel suo cuore, rimanendo costantemente alzato fino a tardi e impartendo lezioni, prendendo l'umilt\u00e0 come base di ogni impresa. La rivelazione dei segreti dei suoi pensieri, in ogni momento, lo proteggeva dalle trappole del diavolo dell'orgoglio, e aumentava il suo desiderio di emulare l'umilt\u00e0 di Cristo. Abbandonata la sua professione preferita, che era la copiatura, si mise al servizio dei fratelli, assumendosi, dietro loro domande, i compiti pi\u00f9 desiderabili e detestati, come trasportare il letame e impastare la pasta. Per scrutarlo, Teoctisto a volte lo accusava falsamente, in presenza di estranei, di un atto o di un altro e lo rimproverava aspramente per aver commesso qualcosa di cui era innocente. Di fronte a ci\u00f2 Platone abbassava la testa e chiedeva perdono in lacrime, senza giustificarsi con una parola perch\u00e9 considerava gli insulti e i rimproveri un guadagno e una gloria.<\/p>\n
Le sue virt\u00f9 traboccavano di amore per il padre e per tutti coloro che camminavano nel timore di Dio, tanto che fu costretto a dirigere il monastero dopo che Teoctisto si ritir\u00f2 presso il suo Signore. L'ascensione alla presidenza fu, per Platone, un'occasione per raggiungere un ulteriore progresso spirituale. Visse separatamente, soprattutto perch\u00e9 parte del Monastero dei Simboli era una lavra. La lavra era originariamente un palazzo collegato ad un corridoio. Mangiava legumi crudi durante tutta la settimana e non prendeva parte alla tavola comune se non la domenica. Beveva molto moderatamente, prendendo solo una porzione d'acqua ogni due giorni, e talvolta due volte a settimana. Inoltre govern\u00f2 saggiamente il gregge, mostrando il massimo fervore nella preghiera, e spinse i monaci sulla montagna dell'osservazione divina. Ogni volta che era libero dalla preghiera, lo riempiva di copie degli scritti dei Santi Padri con una grafia bella e precisa. Ci\u00f2 gli diede una conoscenza unica del patrimonio della Chiesa e lo ispir\u00f2 con i principi della riforma monastica necessaria dopo il caos che accompagn\u00f2 il periodo di ostilit\u00e0 verso le icone.<\/p>\n
Fu durante la campagna dell'imperatore Costantino V, il cui nome \u00e8 Al-Zebelli, nell'anno 780 d.C., che Platone visit\u00f2 Costantinopoli, e i suoi parenti lo accolsero come se fosse risorto dalla morte. La sua unzione ascetica, la dolcezza e la parlata leggiadra, satura di succo evangelico, ne fecero oggetto di interesse per l'intera citt\u00e0. A quel tempo ognuno era come un nuovo messaggero per tutti, correggeva coloro che erano caduti nell'abisso dell'eresia, infondeva lo spirito di castit\u00e0 nei coniugi, ammoniva i giovani fino all'innocenza, consolava gli afflitti e stabiliva la pace tra i litigi. , proponendosi come medico delle anime e compagno dei responsabili, suscitando in tutti il desiderio di perfezione. Di conseguenza, attir\u00f2 alla vita ascetica sua sorella Theoktisti, suo marito Fotino e i loro tre figli: Teodoro, Giuseppe ed Eutimio con la loro sorella, nonch\u00e9 i fratelli di Fotino e altri che erano loro amici. Dopo essersi scusato per la presidenza di uno dei monasteri della capitale e aver rifiutato di accettare il vescovado nicomediano, si isol\u00f2 con loro nel distretto familiare di Sakothion, e lo trasformarono in un monastero politeista. Il nuovo monastero fu costruito su solide basi che continuarono l'eredit\u00e0 dei Santi Padri e comprenderono, in breve tempo, un centinaio di monaci. Divenne un modello per molti monasteri del suo tempo.<\/p>\n
I fratelli camminavano in comunione, profondamente uniti al loro capo, come le membra del corpo lo sono al capo. Tuttavia, il cuore di Platone era rivolto al completo isolamento. Quando si accorse delle qualit\u00e0 superiori di cui godeva San Teodoro - che pi\u00f9 tardi divenne il sovrano dello Studio e fu conosciuto come lo Studita (11 novembre) - e dopo averlo preparato alla guida, gli affid\u00f2 il timone della compagnia, adducendo malattia, e in pensione (794 d.C.).<\/p>\n
Tuttavia, la pace nel monastero fu turbata e i monaci furono perseguitati a seguito della posizione adottata da Platone e Teodoro riguardo al matrimonio illegale dell\u2019imperatore Costantino VI con Teodota, una delle dame di compagnia della regina madre e cugina di Platone e Teodoro. I due santi rinunciarono a ogni timore degli uomini e attaccarono l'imperatore perch\u00e9 aveva osato ignorare e proibire le leggi della Chiesa. Il re convoc\u00f2 san Platone a Costantinopoli e lo costrinse a sottomettersi alla sua volont\u00e0, e la sua risposta, come un novello battista, fu di gridare in faccia all\u2019imperatore: \u201cNon ti \u00e8 lecito avere la moglie di tuo fratello!\u201d (Marco 6:18). Fu immediatamente arrestato e gettato in una stretta cella di prigione, e cominciarono a passargli il cibo attraverso una piccola finestra. Per quanto riguarda i monaci di Sokothi, furono dispersi e il monastero fu saccheggiato, mentre San Teodoro e undici con lui furono esiliati a Salonicco.<\/p>\n
Pass\u00f2 del tempo dopo che avvenne un cambiamento nel palazzo, durante il quale Costantino VI fu rovesciato e l'imperatrice Irene prese il controllo, liberando Platone e facendo tornare Teodoro dall'esilio, cos\u00ec i monaci tornarono a Sokotheion nel 797 d.C. Tuttavia, sotto la minaccia delle invasioni arabo-musulmane, lasciarono il monastero per Costantinopoli, dove l'imperatrice don\u00f2 loro il Monastero Studio, che era stato distrutto durante l'attacco alle icone. Fu Teodoro, l\u00ec, a prendere in mano l'azienda mentre Platone si ritirava in una padella ricoperta di piombo, gelata d'inverno e bruciante, come l'Aton di Babilonia, d'estate. Questa capanna oscura divenne per il Santo di Dio teatro di doppie battaglie. Mise una pesante catena sulla sua gamba mentre la sua anima, con visione divina, si inoltr\u00f2 nella vasta distesa del cielo. Ci\u00f2 non gli imped\u00ec affatto di comunicare con i fratelli che riceveva, confortandoli nei momenti di avversit\u00e0 e rafforzandoli nei campi di guerra imprevista, invitandoli alla pazienza e alla perseveranza e comprendendo gli insegnamenti dei santi padri.<\/p>\n
Platone e Teodoro erano per i monaci del Monastero di Studio l'equivalente di Mos\u00e8 e Aronne per il popolo dell'Antico Testamento. Mostravano uno zelo indefettibile per la tradizione della Santa Chiesa. Pertanto resistettero, in nome delle leggi ecclesiastiche, alla promozione di San Niceforo dallo status laico al rango patriarcale. Ancora una volta i soldati reali li espulsero violentemente dal monastero e li sottoposero ad una feroce persecuzione per un anno intero. Un concilio di vescovi soggetti all'imperatore condann\u00f2 san Platone, che fu consegnato a falsi monaci e deportato in modo umiliante nell'isola di Oxia nell'Arcipelago dei Principi, dove lo rinchiusero in prigione e gli impedirono le necessarie cure sanitarie , soprattutto perch\u00e9 le sue condizioni di salute stavano peggiorando.<\/p>\n
Ancora una volta ci fu un cambio di governo, dopo che l'imperatore Niceforo I fu ucciso in una battaglia contro i bulgari e Michele I sal\u00ec al trono. Gli esuli tornarono al loro monastero, ma Platone non ritorn\u00f2 alla sua solitudine, ma piuttosto si stabil\u00ec in una cella nella quale si sottopose a cure dopo che il suo corpo era stremato dall'eccessiva stanchezza. Ci\u00f2 non gli imped\u00ec le sue continue preghiere n\u00e9 il suo godimento della visione divina, e quando non poteva comunicare con i monaci della compagnia, forniva loro i suoi consigli.<\/p>\n
Durante la Grande Quaresima dell'anno 814 d.C. si ammal\u00f2 gravemente e fu trasferito, su sua richiesta, vicino al luogo di sepoltura, che aveva fatto preparare in anticipo. Quando i suoi occhi si posarono su di lui, esclam\u00f2 con sollievo: \u201cQuesto \u00e8 il mio luogo di riposo!\u201d Vennero a trovarlo numerose persone illustri, tra cui il patriarca Niceforo, che si riconcili\u00f2 con lui per puro amore. Dopo aver perdonato coloro che lo perseguitavano per le loro azioni, come il suo maestro, ed aver espresso a Teodoro e ai suoi monaci che non teneva pi\u00f9 nulla per s\u00e9, ma che anzi aveva dato loro tutto, consegn\u00f2 la sua anima al suo Signore il sabato di Lazzaro, cantando: \u201cI morti risorgeranno, quelli che sono nelle tombe risorgeranno e quelli che sono stati sepolti si rallegreranno\u201d.<\/p>\n
