Eftimios nacque intorno all'anno 377 d.C. a Malatya, Armenia. Il nome di suo padre \u00e8 Paul e il nome di sua madre \u00e8 Dionysia. Entrambi erano importanti e virtuosi. Ma rimasero depressi per anni perch\u00e9 erano senza prole. Frequentando la chiesa di San Polifatto di Malaty, pregavano continuamente Dio affinch\u00e9 concedesse loro il frutto del grembo e lenisse il loro dolore. La loro richiesta fu accolta e il Signore Dio li benedisse con un figlio maschio, a cui chiamarono Eutimio, dalla parola Efthymia, che significa piacere, per la felicit\u00e0 e la gioia dei suoi genitori per la sua nascita. Questo lo giur\u00f2 a Dio prima di nascere. Quando aveva tre anni, suo padre si addorment\u00f2 e sua madre lo present\u00f2 alla chiesa come Anna, la madre di Samuele, e lei accett\u00f2 il diaconato.<\/p>\n

Eutimio trascorse la sua adolescenza studiando la Bibbia e le Cronache dei Santi. Era uno studente di Aftropius, vescovo di Malatya, che in seguito lo nomin\u00f2 sacerdote e lo deleg\u00f2 a prendersi cura dei monasteri di Malatya. Eutimio amava la quiete e frequentava la chiesa di San Polifatto. L\u00ec era abituato a trascorrere le sue giornate ogni volta che trovava il modo di farlo. Una volta all'anno, dopo l'apparizione divina, lasciava la citt\u00e0 per isolarsi su alcune montagne nel deserto fino alla Domenica delle Palme.<\/p>\n
Part\u00ec segretamente per Gerusalemme quando aveva ventinove anni. Arriv\u00f2 nella regione di Fara e si stabil\u00ec tranquillamente vicino a una sorgente d'acqua e palme. L\u00ec incontr\u00f2 un eremita nelle vicinanze, il giusto San Teoctisto, che si sacrific\u00f2 con lui come un'unica anima.<\/p>\n
Dopo 5 anni si trasferirono in una grotta, dove rimasero a lungo, cibandosi di erbe selvatiche e non preoccupandosi di altro che sperare in Dio, finch\u00e9 due pastori di Betania rivelarono la loro ubicazione. Quando la loro fama si diffuse e gli allievi monastici aumentarono, Eutimio trasform\u00f2 la grotta in una chiesa e vi costru\u00ec sopra una lavra, la cui cura fu affidata a Teoctisto.<\/p>\n

La gente accorreva al santo di Dio da tutte le direzioni e molti chiedevano l'assoluzione per mano sua.
