ولد باسم فالنتاين فيليكسوفيتش في 27-نيسان -1877 في كيريتش ( شرقي شبه جزيرة القرم) و كان أفراد عائلته موظفين مدنيين لدى الملوك الليتوانيين و البولدنيين و أسرته كانت فقيرة .
يذكر القديس لوقا أنه ورث عن والده الورع و التقوى أما فهمه الحقيقي للايمان المسيحي فجاء من خلال دراسته للعهد الجديد التي تلقاها على يدي المشرف على تخرجه من المدرسة الثانوية.
