The Reading is from St. Paul's Letter to the Hebrews 4:14-16; 5:1-6
BRETHREN, since we have a high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we have not a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need. For every high priest chosen from among men is appointed to act on behalf of men in relation to God, to offer gifts and sacrifices for sins
He can deal gently with the ignorant and wayward, since he himself is beset with weakness. Because of this he is bound to offer sacrifice for his own sins as well as for those of the people. The Eternal Wooden Altar
When the priest enters a Church, he immediately kneels in front of the Altar, then rises to kiss the Gospel Book and the Table. After doing this, he begins his service
The Epistle we read on this day talks about Christ, the Archpriest, and emphasizes His uniqueness compared to the Old Testament Priesthood. Christ was not a regular priest who offered sacrifices on behalf of people and himself. He was not a priest who, just as a mediator, offered on the altar the offerings of the people to God for his and their sins. Christ's uniqueness lies in that He was not the mediator, but the actual sacrifice. As the Liturgical texts calls Him, He is the one who offers and the offered sacrifice, the slaughterer and the slaughtered sacrifice. He offered Himself for our sins, or as the liturgical texts repeats always, "for our salvation
The Gospel passage calls us to carry the Cross and follow Christ with great desire. This is the mark of the disciple of Jesus. Jesus spoke these words to His disciples and to Peter, when he told them for the first time that His royal mission on earth will end in his crucifixion. Facing this stumbling matter (of the Cross), Jesus bluntly announced to His disciples that they are free to follow or deny Him, but for those who follow Him, there is no choice other than carrying the Cross
The link of these two (Epistle and Gospel) passages to the feast of the Veneration of the Holy Cross in this Third Sunday of Lent lies in that Christ perfected His priesthood by being both a priest and a sacrifice on the tree of the Cross. So the Cross became the altar of His priesthood. The Lord Jesus truly carried His Cross for our sake for the forgiveness of sins. This is the link between Priesthood and carrying the Cross, following Christ
Is following Christ today necessitates carrying the Cross as happened with Him two thousand years ago? We, today's Christians, try to reconcile the world with God. We try to live in the former and to please the latter. We often live in a continuous "Bazar" of spiritual life, compromising on certain principles, matching between opposing ideas, and ignoring any differences we have with the world and its mentality… All this we try to accomplish, so that we do not carry the Cross as Jesus did. All this we do so that we may live as sons of this age, and not as apostles and ambassadors of Christ in our world, telling others about His lasting world and city
Can we, in a world that is overshadowed by immorality, not lift the Cross of faith high up? In a world that made from lying its law, can't we find a place for the Cross of truth? Isn't the Cross ignorance to people? It carries a message of sacrifice in a world that calls this matter silliness, and looks instead after its self-interest. When all run competing to care for their self-interests, we, who are carrying the Cross, begin to feel the taste of the Cross' message, of self-denial and the service of others. When people do anything to gain profit (at the expense of others), we ought to lay our profit on the Cross, and burn it (our profit) as a sacrifice, by the fire of faith. We must not forget our mission and priesthood, which is built on love and self-sacrifice. In a world that has an increase in exploitative profits, we need, more than ever, crosses lifted high up. In a world that people rush to worship money, pleasure and vainglory, we ought to be careful more than ever to venerate the Cross. In a material world that does not believe except in self-interest, the Cross is more than ever a need to be carried as a spiritual message for man. In a world that lives to die, the Cross is a call to resurrection
The world dedicated to science, information and order educates a man on how to be self-sufficient and to fight others and to protect one's needs, thinking that by doing this one gains his soul. For us, the Cross is an altar on which we offer ourselves for the others who are searching to find their self. Sacrifice is a "bait," an attractive morsel that traps its eater. The Cross is a way of the resurrection, even if it begins with death. Sacrifice is a gain to all the ambassadors of Christ in the world, for it proclaims the resurrection even through their death, as happened with their Master. No slave is better than his Master
This is what Christ meant when he said: "Whoever sacrificed his self for my sake and for the Gospel's sake has found it." If our self is valuable for us, than there is nothing more than the Gospel and its Master that deserves it. If we realize the invaluable worth of our self, then we will not be hesitant to bow down in worship, as priests, to the divine love, to the Cross, our eternal altar, crying courageously in faith
"To thy Cross we bow down and worship, and to thy Holy resurrection we praise and glorify." Amen

- وجها الصليب ووجه الله في الصيام -
في الأحد الثالث من الصيام المقدّس وخلال الأسبوع الرابع الذي يليه أي وسط الصيام ترفع الكنيسة الصليب المكرّم للسجود. نحن بالطبع حين نقبّل الصليب نسجد لصليب الربّ وآلامه من ناحية، ولكن أيضاً للسّر الأزليّ الذي يحمله الصليب والذي اكتمل في ملء الزمان عند صلب المسيح. الصليب هو سرّ أكثر ممّا هو أيقونة للصلْب. سرّ الصليب هذا هو سرّ الانتقال من المعاناة إلى وجه الله. ولهذا السبب بالذات رفعت الكنيسة الصليب في منتصف الصيام، الصيام الذي غايته الأخيرة هي رؤية الله ومجده. قراءات الصوم التي من العهد القديم تركز على شخصَي موسى وإيليا، وكيف كلّ منهما صام عندما أراد أن يرى الله. هذه غاية الصوم، وأداة ذلك هو سرّ الصليب.
إنّ المسيح الدجّال، عدوَّ الله والإنسان، لم يأتِ بعد لكنّه كان في العالم، كما يقول يوحنا الحبيب" هناك مسحاء دجّالون كثيرون" (يوحنا 2، 8). وبولس الرسول منذ أيامه يقول "سرّ الإثم الآن يعمل" (2 تسا 7، 2). فكما أنّ "سرّ الضلال" كائن في العالم قبل أن يأتي المسيح الدجّال، هكذا كان الصليب منذ الأزل قبل الصليب. والدليل على ذلك أنّ الربّ يسوع نفسه وقبل حدث صلبه، خاطب تلاميذه: "من أراد أن يتبعني فليحملْ صليبه وينكرْ بنفسه ويتبعني". فالصليب كسرّ كان ويستمر. وصليب المسيح هو كمال عمله ومنعطف البداية الجديدة فيه.
للصليب كما يقول القدّيس يوحنا الذهبي الفم وجهان، وذلك بحسب عبارة بولس الرسول، إذ لا يقول فقط "الذي به صُلبَ العالمُ لي"، بل يضيف "وبه أنا صُلبتُ للعالم". فالعالم يُصلب لنا، يعني أنّنا نترك ما في العالم من شهوات وننصرف إلى الجهادات النسكيّة في طلب رضى الله وحفظ وصاياه مفتقرين بالروح إليه. وهذه المرحلة تعرف بالمرحلة الروحيّة الأولى المسماة بالعمل (Praxis). أما أن نُصلب نحن للعالم، فهي المرحلة اللاحقة والناتجة عن الأولى أي حين نموت نحن عن العالم، حين يتنقّى الانسان من أهوائه ولا يعود العالم في ملذّاته يؤثّر به. حين تنصلح الأهواء وتأخذ لها ميولاً صحيحة لا تعود ملذّات العالم لذيذة. آنذاك، في هذه المرحلة يقتني الإنسان الفكرة الصحيحة عن الجمال وعن الغنى والفقر وعن اللذة،، ألا وهي العفّة، ويموت بتطهّره عن أهوائه الخاطئة، عن العالميات. وهذه المرحلة هي المرحلة التي تؤهّل الإنسان لرؤية الله لأنّ أنقياء القلوب هم الذين يعاينون الله، وهي ما تسمّى الثاوريّا (Theoria).
فالوجه الأول للصليب دائماً هو وجه الأتعاب وإماتة الأنانيّة والذات في سبيل طلب وجه الله، إنّها مرحلة الموت وهي ما تسمّى مرحلة العمل (Praxis). أما الوجه الثاني فهو حالة معاينة الله ومعاينة وجهه المنشود، بعد أن نكون قد صُلبنا نحن للعالم ومتنا عنه. وهو ما يسمّى بمرحلة الثاوريا (رؤية الله ومعاينته). لذلك تعترف الترانيم للأبرار أنّهم بالعمل وصلوا إلى الثاوريا. وهذا ما يعبّر عنه بولس الرسول بوجهَي الموت والقيامة مع المسيح على الصليب. فالوجه الأول للصليب أي الموت، يجلب فوراً وجهه الثاني، القيامة. هذا هو سرّ الصليب أنّه ينقلنا من وجهه الأوّل إلى معاينة وجه الله (الثاوريا) أي إلى وجهه الثاني.
هكذا إذن نفهم لماذا يؤكّد القدّيس غريغوريوس بالاماس، المدافع عن النعمة اللامخلوقة وعن رؤية النور الإلهيّ ووجه الله، أنّه لا يستطيع أحدٌ معاينة الله دون الصليب، كما يشرح كيف أن كلّ من حمل الصليب في سرّ المعاناة من أجل وجه يسوع المسيح قد رآه.
قبل المسيح، حمل ابراهيم، أبو المؤمنين وخليل الله، أتعاب الصليب حين أطاع الله وترك أهله وعشيرته منطلقاً إلى الأرض التي سيُريه إياها الله (تكوين 1، 12) وعاش سرّ الصليب في وجهه الأول ولهذا ابراهيم أيضاً، رأى الله الثالوث واستقبل الملائكة الثلاثة (تكوين 1، 18). ويعقوب أيضاً، كانت حياته كلّها صليباً مستمراً في خدمته الطويلة من أجل طاعة أهله واختياره فتاة بحسب مشيئتهم. أضف إلى ذلك صبره على عداوة أخيه وتواضعه حين انحنى إلى أسفل العصا أمام أخيه عيسو. إن أتعاب سرّ الصليب هذه قادته ليصرخ يوماً "لقد رأيت الله وجهاً لوجه وخلصت نفسي" (تكوين 32، 20). وموسى شارك في سرّ الصليب الأزلي حين ترك فخر البيت الفرعونـيّ، وحين اعتبر عار المسيح أشرف من كنوز فرعون، كما يقول بولس الرسول (عبرانيين 11، 26). وحين بالعود والماء عبر مع بني قومه البحر الأحمر وتاهوا في البريّة سنين طويلة. وبالأصوام وكلّ تلك الأتعاب شاهد الوجه الثاني للصليب، فعاين الله في العليقة الملتهبة وغير المحترقة.
هكذا كلّ من نظر إلى الصليب من وجهه الأوّل لا بدّ أن يعاين وجهه الثاني، أي كلّ من مات مع المسيح سيقوم معه أيضاً. وهذا تماماً ما يعنيه الربّ بقوله "كلّ من بذل (أمات) نفسه من أجلي ومن أجل الانجيل وجدها (أقامها)". لذلك يدخل المسيحيّ الصوم بجرأة ولا يحزن على ذاته ويطلب الموت من أجل الربّ كلّ لحظة فيحقّق سرّ قيامته.
الربّ يسوع هو القيامة والحياة، والصليب هو الطريق. سرّ الصليب هو اتباع يسوع والسعي إلى وجهه الكريم. هذا ما نسجد له أمام الصليب.
فيا قوّة الصليب الكريم، المحيية الإلهيّة التي لا تدرك، لا تخذلينا نحن الخطأة. آميــن
