Fra Betsaida i Galil\u00e6a. Han er sammen med sin bror Jakob, Zebed\u00e6us' s\u00f8n, og en af de Tolv, og hans titel er Tordens S\u00f8n. De to br\u00f8dre blev set af Mesteren "med deres far Zebed\u00e6us reparere deres garn, s\u00e5 han kaldte p\u00e5 dem, og Evangelisten Johannes forlod skibet og deres far fra da af og fulgte ham" (Matt 4:12). S\u00e5 bredte dette ord sig blandt br\u00f8drene: Den discipel skal ikke d\u00f8\u201d (Joh 21:24).<\/p>\n
Efter at disciplene spredte sig over hele verden, tog han til Lilleasien (det nuv\u00e6rende T\u00fcrkiye) og d\u00f8de der efter at have skrevet sit evangelium der i slutningen af det f\u00f8rste \u00e5rhundrede i byen Efesos. Men f\u00f8r det, under den anden forf\u00f8lgelse under kejser Domitians regeringstid, blev han f\u00f8rt til Rom og lagt i en gryde fuld af kogende olie. Han slap uskadt og blev forvist til \u00f8en Patmos i Gr\u00e6kenland, og det bekr\u00e6fter han i. \u00c5benbaringsbogen, som han skrev der. Der er et kloster i hans navn p\u00e5 \u00f8en den dag i dag. S\u00e5 vendte han tilbage til Efesos, hvor han d\u00f8de.<\/p>\n
Sankt Irnaeus, som var biskop af Lyon i Frankrig i det andet \u00e5rhundrede, siger: "S\u00e5 Johannes, Herrens discipel, som st\u00f8ttede sig til hans bryst, for han udgav ogs\u00e5 et evangelium under sit ophold i Efesos" (Response to Heretics 1) , 3). Irnaeus blev f\u00f8dt i Izmir omkring \u00e5r 115, og som dreng kendte han dens biskop, Saint Polycarp, som havde modtaget sin arv fra Johannes Evangelisten.<\/p>\n
Den l\u00e6rde Origenes fra Alexandria forklarer, at de tre evangelister skrev om begivenhederne i Kristi liv og understregede hans menneskelighed, og at Johannes bekr\u00e6ftede Herrens guddommelighed, og derfor begyndte han sit evangelium med dette: \u201dI begyndelsen var Ordet, og Ordet var hos Gud, og som en gud var Ordet." Han er den, der klart l\u00e6rte, at Kristus havde en eksistens forud for hans tilsynekomst i k\u00f8det og insisterede p\u00e5, at Guds manifestation (eller herlighed) kun kunne finde sted i verden gennem Jesu liv, d\u00f8d og opstandelse. I Johannesevangeliet l\u00e6ser vi dette fantastiske ord: "Jeg er vejen, sandheden og livet" (14:6). Hvilket menneske t\u00f8r sige dette? Han er den eneste, der var i stand til at sige: "Den, der har set mig, har set Faderen" (Joh 14:8). Mange ord om denne magt sagde klart, at Kristus forener sig med Gud.<\/p>\n
Det siges om ham i hans alderdom, at kristne sagde til ham: Hvorfor siger du altid: "Elsk hinanden"? Han ville svare dem: \u00bbDette er, hvad jeg l\u00e6rte af Frelseren.<\/p>\n
Kirken fejrer ham den 8. maj (pilgrimsf\u00e6rden til hans grav) og hans himmelfart den 26. september.<\/p>\n
