Als er heranwuchs, ernannte ihn Papst Marklinus zum Priester. Dies geschah vor der Christenverfolgung durch Kaiser Diokletian.<\/p>\n<p>W\u00e4hrend dieser Zeit der Verfolgung zeigte er gro\u00dfen Eifer und Mut. Er vermisste Beichtv\u00e4ter und f\u00fcgte sie hinzu. Er k\u00fcmmerte sich um die Beerdigung des M\u00e4rtyrers Themotheus von Antiochia, nachdem dieser wegen seines Glaubens an Christus hingerichtet worden war. Er wurde verhaftet und ins Gef\u00e4ngnis gesteckt.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p>Nachdem Konstantin der Gro\u00dfe am 28. Oktober 312 n. Chr. Maxentius besiegt und ihm Rom entrissen hatte, kam Sylvester aus dem Gef\u00e4ngnis und begann zu predigen und zu taufen. Dann starb Melquiades, Bischof von Rom, im Januar 314 n. Chr. und Sylvester wurde zu seinem Nachfolger gew\u00e4hlt.<\/p>\n<p>Dem neuen Bischof ging es darum, das Haus in Ordnung zu bringen, den Armen zu dienen und die kirchlichen Br\u00e4uche vom Heidentum zu reinigen. Es ging ihm auch um die Bek\u00e4mpfung von H\u00e4resien. Er baute sieben Kirchen im Basilika-Stil. Als das erste \u00d6kumenische Konzil in Nic\u00e4a stattfand, konnte er aufgrund seines Alters nicht daran teilnehmen und schickte daher einen Vertreter in seinem Namen.<\/p>\n<p>Dar\u00fcber hinaus erw\u00e4hnte er, dass Sylvester seine Auseinandersetzungen mit den Juden \u00fcber den einen Gott in drei Personen und das Leiden des Herrn Jesus im K\u00f6rper und die Auferstehung hatte, und er inspirierte sie mit der Kraft des Wortes und des Geistes.<\/p>\n<p>Der bisch\u00f6fliche Dienst des Heiligen dauerte einundzwanzig Jahre und elf Monate und er starb nach einem rechtschaffenen Leben voller Tugenden.<\/p>\n<p>Die Heilige Kirche feiert ihn am zweiten Januar.<\/p>\n<p>Troparia in der vierten Melodie<br \/> Deine Taten der Wahrheit haben dich deiner Herde als ein Gesetz des Glaubens, ein Bild der Sanftmut und einen Lehrer der Enthaltsamkeit gezeigt, Vater Hohepriester Sylvester. Deshalb jubelst du nun, o Vater, mit den Reihen der Engel und jubelst in den Himmeln.
