Er war der Sohn einer adligen christlichen Familie aus der Provinz Mazedonien in Nordgriechenland. Sein Vater war ein Milit\u00e4rkommandeur, der ihn zu Selbstbeherrschung, Dschihad und Ehrlichkeit sowie einem gro\u00dfen Wissensschatz erzog. Dann trat er wie sein Vater in die Armee ein und wurde Milit\u00e4rkommandant. Maximian hatte ihn trotz seines jungen Alters zum Kommandeur der Armee von Thessalien und Konsul (Gouverneur) von Griechenland ernannt. Demetrius glaubte an Jesus Christus, lebte das Evangelium in Liebe, Frieden und Gerechtigkeit und lehrte das Wort Gottes \u00f6ffentlich und praktizierte es, und viele glaubten durch ihn trotz der Verfolgung.       <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p>Zu<img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-529\" src=\"http:\/\/orthodoxonline.org\/theology\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/3\/2009\/02\/26_oct_demetrios_greatmartyr.jpg\" alt=\"Ikone des Heiligen Demetrius, des Gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigen\" style=\"float: left;\" title=\"Ikone des Heiligen Demetrius, des Gro\u00dfz\u00fcgigen\" width=\"108\" height=\"311\" \/>Als Kaiser Maximian, der Kaiser des Westens, im Jahr 290 die Skythen besiegte, reiste er auf dem Weg nach Mailand \u00fcber Thessaloniki. Er befahl, den heidnischen G\u00f6ttern Opfer darzubringen und Siegesfeste abzuhalten. Die Heiden, die neidisch waren von Demetrius nutzte die Gelegenheit der Anwesenheit des Kaisers und erkl\u00e4rte, dass der junge Anf\u00fchrer ein Christ sei. Der Kaiser wurde sehr w\u00fctend, weil Demetrius mit seiner Konvertierung zum Christentum nicht zufrieden war, aber er predigte das Evangelium und nutzte seine offizielle Position das Evangelium zu predigen. Der Kaiser nahm ihm seine Titel und Insignien ab und befahl, ihn einzusperren, bis er entschieden hatte, was mit ihm geschehen sollte. Dann nahmen ihn die Soldaten und warfen ihn an einen feuchten Ort im Untergrund, unter einem Toilettengeb\u00e4ude in der Stadt. Es strahlte F\u00e4ulnis aus Ger\u00fcche. Er war bereit f\u00fcr das Martyrium und wartete ungeduldig auf das Ende der Feierlichkeiten, um dem Herrn zu begegnen, getauft mit seinem Blut.<\/p>\n<p>Es war \u00fcblich, bei Siegesfesten Ringkampfpartys zu veranstalten, und es gab einen Champion namens Hawash, der alle seine Konkurrenten t\u00f6tete und alle K\u00e4mpfe gewann. Ein christlicher junger Mann namens Nestor, der schwach und gl\u00e4ubig war, forderte ihn heraus. Er bat im Gef\u00e4ngnis um Demetrius\u2018 Gebete und betrat den Ring mit dem Ruf: \u201eOh Gott, Demetrius, hilf mir\u201c, also ging er zu Haush hinunter und schlug ihn. Der Kaiser wurde w\u00fctend und befahl die T\u00f6tung von Nestorius, Demetrius und seinem Diener Lupus, die mit der Kleidung und dem Ring des Heiligen Wunder vollbrachten.<\/p>\n<p>Die sterblichen \u00dcberreste des Heiligen wurden von frommen M\u00e4nnern heimlich mitgenommen und begraben. Gott gab ein Zeichen der Heiligkeit seines M\u00e4rtyrers, als Parf\u00fcm aus seinen \u00dcberresten zu str\u00f6men begann und viele ihrer Krankheiten heilte, weshalb die Kirche ihn \u201eden guten \u00dcberstr\u00f6menden\u201c nannte. Bemerkenswert ist, dass noch heute der Duft von Parf\u00fcm aus seinem Grab str\u00f6mt. Sein Schrein befindet sich in einer Kirche, die seinen Namen tr\u00e4gt, im Herzen der Stadt Thessaloniki, wo er als F\u00fcrsprecher der Stadt und als ihr Retter aus Widrigkeiten und N\u00f6ten gilt. Bis heute finden dort jedes Jahr und eine ganze Woche lang besondere Feierlichkeiten f\u00fcr ihn statt, an denen die ganze Stadt teilnimmt.<\/p>\n<p>Die Kirche feiert ihn am 26.
