Naci\u00f3 en el a\u00f1o 1651 d.C. cerca de la ciudad de Kyiv. Dado que su padre estaba en el ej\u00e9rcito y a menudo estaba ausente de su casa, su madre fue quien lo cri\u00f3 y tuvo la influencia principal para educarlo en la virtud y el amor a Cristo.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p>Demetrio ingres\u00f3 en el Instituto Eclesi\u00e1stico de Kiev cuando ten\u00eda once a\u00f1os y desarroll\u00f3 el don de la palabra. Fue ordenado sacerdote a los veinticuatro a\u00f1os. Se convirti\u00f3 en predicador y administrador de varios monasterios. Intent\u00f3 m\u00e1s de una vez retirarse para convertirse en monje, pero la necesidad que la iglesia ten\u00eda de \u00e9l lo convenci\u00f3 de abandonar el deseo de su coraz\u00f3n. El m\u00e1rtir le dijo: \u201cHe sufrido por causa de Cristo m\u00e1s sufrimientos de los que he dicho\u201d, y comenz\u00f3 a mostrarle le sus heridas en diferentes partes de su cuerpo, y luego le dijo: \u201c\u00bfVes? \u00a1Sent\u00ed m\u00e1s dolor del que escrib\u00ed!<\/p>\n<p>San Demetrio fue elegido obispo de la ciudad de Rostov en el a\u00f1o 1702 d.C. Se dedic\u00f3 a enderezar lo torcido y a reavivar lo que hab\u00eda degenerado en las creencias de su pueblo y en las pr\u00e1cticas de la iglesia. Se mantuvo firme en su ascetismo, su habitual rigor consigo mismo y sus oraciones regulares, a pesar de sus numerosas dolencias f\u00edsicas. Se le atribuyen un gran n\u00famero de valiosas obras espirituales. Sus contempor\u00e1neos informaron que ense\u00f1\u00f3 m\u00e1s con su ejemplo que con sus sermones y ense\u00f1anzas. Su comportamiento en oraci\u00f3n, ayuno, compasi\u00f3n y misericordia tuvo un gran impacto en las almas de los malos y de los justos al mismo tiempo.<\/p>\n<p>Tres d\u00edas antes de su muerte, quienes lo rodeaban se enteraron de su inminente partida. Reuni\u00f3 a los sirvientes y cantantes y se postr\u00f3 ante ellos uno por uno y les pidi\u00f3 perd\u00f3n. Luego se encerr\u00f3 en su celda, de pie en oraci\u00f3n.
