\"Amphilochios,Il est l'un des p\u00e8res les plus \u00e9minents qui ont particip\u00e9 au deuxi\u00e8me concile \u0153cum\u00e9nique de Constantinople en 381, qui fut le concile qui r\u00e9futa l'h\u00e9r\u00e9sie de Mac\u00e9donius, qui niait la divinit\u00e9 du Saint-Esprit. Le deuxi\u00e8me Concile \u0153cum\u00e9nique est celui qui a \u00e9tabli toute la Constitution de la foi telle que nous la connaissons aujourd\u2019hui apr\u00e8s avoir affirm\u00e9 la divinit\u00e9 du Saint-Esprit : \u00ab Et dans le Saint-Esprit, le Seigneur, celui qui donne la vie\u2026 \u00bb<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Amphilochius est originaire de la r\u00e9gion de Cappadoce et est le cousin de saint Gr\u00e9goire le Th\u00e9ologien. Il apprit les hautes sciences aupr\u00e8s du professeur pa\u00efen Libanius d'Antioche, professeur de Saint Jean Chrysostome. Il se rendit \u00e0 Constantinople, la capitale, o\u00f9 il exer\u00e7a le droit \u00e0 partir de l'an 463 apr\u00e8s JC. Il \u00e9tait connu pour sa sagesse, son int\u00e9grit\u00e9, son amour et sa douceur. Il a r\u00e9ussi et est devenu c\u00e9l\u00e8bre jusqu'\u00e0 ce que les personnes touch\u00e9es par son travail tentent de l'insulter et de d\u00e9former sa r\u00e9putation. Il fut choqu\u00e9 d'\u00eatre d\u00e9\u00e7u de parvenir \u00e0 la justice entre les gens, alors il quitta la profession apr\u00e8s six ans d'exercice et s'inclina vers la vie chr\u00e9tienne, sous l'influence de saint Gr\u00e9goire, et voulut pratiquer l'asc\u00e9tisme dans le d\u00e9sert avec un son ami nomm\u00e9 H\u00e9raclide. Mais sa situation familiale l\u2019en emp\u00eache. Il resta \u00e0 la maison pour s'occuper de son p\u00e8re \u00e2g\u00e9, qui n'avait personne pour s'occuper de lui \u00e0 part lui. Durant cette p\u00e9riode, il rencontra saint Basile le Grand, un ami de son parent saint Gr\u00e9goire le Th\u00e9ologien. Basile \u00e9tait pr\u00eatre et Amphilochius l'aimait et devint son ami et son \u00e9l\u00e8ve. Saint Basile lui a adress\u00e9 plusieurs de ses lettres les plus importantes et lui a d\u00e9di\u00e9 son livre sur le Saint-Esprit. En droit canonique, nous avons quatre s\u00e9ries de lois canoniques \u00e9crites par Basile et Amphilochius sous forme de lettres en r\u00e9ponse \u00e0 ses questions.<\/p>\n

En 370, Basile devient archev\u00eaque de C\u00e9sar\u00e9e Cappadoce. Il se trouvait dans une dure confrontation avec les ariens, soutenus par l'empereur et les Romains, et il avait cruellement besoin d'\u00e9v\u00eaques int\u00e8gres en qui il pouvait avoir confiance. Lorsque l'\u00e9v\u00each\u00e9 d'Iconium (Asie Mineure) devint vacant en 374, Amphilochius fut invit\u00e9 \u00e0 y servir. Il s'enfuit d'abord, puis revint et acquies\u00e7a. Comme il \u00e9tait in\u00e9branlable dans la foi, pur de caract\u00e8re, audacieux et courageux, et poss\u00e9dant des talents de rh\u00e9torique et d'\u00e9crivain, il affronta l'h\u00e9r\u00e9sie arienne avec toute l'efficacit\u00e9 et la d\u00e9termination n\u00e9cessaires. Amphilochius combattit l'h\u00e9r\u00e9sie de Mac\u00e9donius, qui niait la divinit\u00e9 du Saint-Esprit, l'h\u00e9r\u00e9sie d'Eunomius (arianisme) et l'h\u00e9r\u00e9sie des Messaliens, qui disaient que l'un des effets du p\u00e9ch\u00e9 d'Adam \u00e9tait qu'en chaque \u00eatre humain il y avait un diable qui n'a pas \u00e9t\u00e9 chass\u00e9 par le bapt\u00eame, mais par une pri\u00e8re concentr\u00e9e et continue. Il revenait \u00e0 saint Basile pour des questions de doctrine et lui posait des questions.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s la mort de saint Basile en 379, il continua \u00e0 combattre les h\u00e9r\u00e9sies communes, participa au deuxi\u00e8me concile \u0153cum\u00e9nique et contribua \u00e0 d\u00e9clarer la divinit\u00e9 du Saint-Esprit et l'unit\u00e9 de son essence avec le P\u00e8re et le Fils.<\/p>\n

Saint Amphilochius v\u00e9cut jusqu'\u00e0 la fin du IVe si\u00e8cle apr\u00e8s JC. La derni\u00e8re mention de lui a eu lieu \u00e0 l'occasion du concile qui s'est tenu dans la ville de Constantinople en 493 apr\u00e8s JC et a pr\u00e9sent\u00e9 les affaires du dioc\u00e8se de Bosra dans le pays de Hauran. Il a repos\u00e9 en paix dans le Seigneur apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9tabli la foi droite et l'amour de la vertu parmi son peuple, laissant derri\u00e8re lui de pr\u00e9cieux sermons et \u00e9crits. La Sainte \u00c9glise le c\u00e9l\u00e8bre le 23 novembre. Ainsi que l'\u00c9glise maronite.<\/p>\n

Th\u00e9odoretus, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Qara (393-466), raconte dans son histoire qu'il a demand\u00e9 \u00e0 l'empereur Th\u00e9odose le Grand d'\u00eatre strict dans la pers\u00e9cution des ariens. Mais il s\u2019est av\u00e9r\u00e9 que l\u2019empereur n\u2019\u00e9tait pas enthousiasm\u00e9 par cette id\u00e9e. Amphilochius revint donc chez lui une seconde fois, et son fils Arcadius fut \u00e0 c\u00f4t\u00e9 de l'empereur apr\u00e8s qu'il eut \u00e9t\u00e9 d\u00e9clar\u00e9 co-empereur. L'\u00e9v\u00eaque s'approcha de l'empereur et lui fit le salut habituel, ignorant son fils Arcadius. L'empereur se mit en col\u00e8re et consid\u00e9ra l'affaire comme une insulte pour lui et son fils. Amphilochius lui dit : \u00ab Voyez-vous, Votre Majest\u00e9 l'Empereur, qui est le roi de la terre, comme vous ne supportez pas que quelqu'un m\u00e9prise votre fils, alors vous vous mettez en col\u00e8re et envisagez de vous insulter, \u00e0 combien plus forte raison Dieu, qui ? est le roi et le p\u00e8re, m\u00e9prisez ceux qui blasph\u00e8ment son fils et disent qu'il est dans une position inf\u00e9rieure \u00e0 lui ! Th\u00e9odose prit conscience de l'affaire et s'effor\u00e7a d'emp\u00eacher les Ariens de se r\u00e9unir et de disperser leurs retrouvailles.<\/p>\n
