L&#039;archidiacre F\u00e9lix, rebelle, prit le pouvoir \u00e0 Rome, favorable \u00e0 l&#039;arianisme, et b\u00e9n\u00e9ficia du soutien d&#039;un grand nombre de membres du clerg\u00e9 romain. L\u00e9once mourut en 358 et Eudoxe, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Marash, lui succ\u00e9da. Georges, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Alexandrie, Mac\u00e9donius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Constantinople, Germanius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Sermius, et Auxence, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Milan, soutinrent tous l&#039;arianisme.<\/p>\n<p>  <!--more-->  <\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">\u00c9galit\u00e9 dans l&#039;essence, la similitude et la diff\u00e9rence :<\/span><\/strong> Apr\u00e8s cette grande victoire, il \u00e9tait naturel que les Ariens aspirent \u00e0 amender le Credo de Nic\u00e9e et r\u00e9clament ouvertement une telle modification. Cependant, apr\u00e8s la mort d&#039;Ast\u00e9rios le Mystique, aucun th\u00e9ologien de renom ne se manifesta parmi eux pour porter cette revendication. Th\u00e9odore, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;H\u00e9racl\u00e9e (355), \u00e9tait davantage un commentateur biblique qu&#039;un th\u00e9ologien profond. Eus\u00e8be d&#039;\u00c9m\u00e8se (359) s&#039;attacha \u00e0 r\u00e9futer les pa\u00efens, les juifs, les novatiens et les manich\u00e9ens. C&#039;\u00e9tait une figure mod\u00e9r\u00e9e et \u00e9quilibr\u00e9e qui abhorrait l&#039;extr\u00e9misme. Georges, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Laodic\u00e9e, \u00e9tait de cette m\u00eame trempe\u00a0; il \u00e9crivit contre le manich\u00e9isme et s&#039;int\u00e9ressa particuli\u00e8rement \u00e0 la vie d&#039;Eus\u00e8be d&#039;\u00c9m\u00e8se. Acace, \u00e9v\u00eaque de C\u00e9sar\u00e9e en Palestine, succ\u00e9da \u00e0 son pr\u00e9d\u00e9cesseur c\u00e9sarien, prenant soin de la biblioth\u00e8que de son \u00e9piscopat, l&#039;enrichissant et fournissant un commentaire du livre de l&#039;Eccl\u00e9siaste. Ainsi, seuls Aetius le diacre et le bras droit de L\u00e9ontius, l&#039;ennemi des orthodoxes \u00e0 Antioche, rest\u00e8rent.<\/p>\n<p>Ce dernier \u00e9tait un extr\u00e9miste passionn\u00e9 de th\u00e9ologie et de d\u00e9bats. Il \u00e9tait insatisfait de la conception arienne dominante de la similitude d&#039;essence. <strong>Homo<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">i<\/span>\u00e9vacuation<\/strong> Le pendant de la doctrine orthodoxe d&#039;\u00e9galit\u00e9 en essence <strong>Homou\u00e9<\/strong> Ce qui fut approuv\u00e9 par le concile de Nic\u00e9e. Il d\u00e9clara ouvertement la diff\u00e9rence de fond. <strong>Anomoios<\/strong> Les orthodoxes proclam\u00e8rent ouvertement qu&#039;il n&#039;existait aucune relation entre le P\u00e8re et le Fils\u00a0! Cette position allait m\u00eame au-del\u00e0 de celle d&#039;Arius lui-m\u00eame. Germain, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Sirmium, partageait cet avis et convoqua un synode \u00e0 Sirmium durant l&#039;\u00e9t\u00e9 357. Ce synode condamna toute r\u00e9f\u00e9rence \u00e0 la substance, \u00e0 l&#039;\u00e9galit\u00e9 de substance ou \u00e0 la ressemblance, arguant que ces termes \u00e9taient absents des \u00c9critures et qu&#039;ils troublaient la paix des fid\u00e8les. Il affirma la grandeur et la sup\u00e9riorit\u00e9 du P\u00e8re sur le Fils. Les ariens r\u00e9unis, d\u00e9sireux de promouvoir cette nouvelle doctrine, contact\u00e8rent Hosius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Cordoue et fervent d\u00e9fenseur de l&#039;\u00e9galit\u00e9 de substance. Hosius, cependant, \u00e9tait trop \u00e2g\u00e9 et trop faible pour s&#039;y opposer, et il finit par se rallier \u00e0 la nouvelle doctrine.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">r\u00e9sistance orthodoxe :<\/span><\/strong> L&#039;\u00e9v\u00eaque Eudoxe d&#039;Antioche persista dans son erreur, s&#039;enracinant excessivement dans l&#039;arianisme. Il alla jusqu&#039;\u00e0 adopter les enseignements de Sermium et \u00e0 exhorter les \u00e9v\u00eaques du si\u00e8ge d&#039;Antioche \u00e0 faire de m\u00eame. Il favorisa \u00e9galement Aius et Eunomius, dont il adopta les id\u00e9es. Ceci provoqua l&#039;indignation des orthodoxes de l&#039;\u00c9glise d&#039;Antioche, rejoints par un grand nombre de mod\u00e9r\u00e9s. Il est \u00e0 noter que le synode d&#039;Antioche, consacr\u00e9 en 341, s&#039;abstint d&#039;\u00e9pouser les enseignements d&#039;Arius, de s&#039;associer \u00e0 lui ou de porter son nom. De plus, la plupart des \u00e9v\u00eaques antiochiens ayant particip\u00e9 au premier synode de Sermium en 351 exprim\u00e8rent des opinions qui, correctement interpr\u00e9t\u00e9es, ne pouvaient \u00eatre consid\u00e9r\u00e9es comme h\u00e9r\u00e9tiques.<\/p>\n<p>Quand Aius introduisit sa nouvelle h\u00e9r\u00e9sie et nia la divinit\u00e9 du Fils, ces m\u00eames \u00e9v\u00eaques mod\u00e9r\u00e9s s&#039;\u00e9lev\u00e8rent contre lui. Georges, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Laodic\u00e9e, \u00e9crivit \u00e0 Mac\u00e9donius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Constantinople, \u00e0 Basile, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Ancyre, \u00e0 Cicorpius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Nicom\u00e9die, et \u00e0 Eug\u00e8ne, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Nic\u00e9e, les suppliant d&#039;intervenir au plus vite pour d\u00e9livrer l&#039;\u00c9glise d&#039;Antioche d&#039;Eun\u00f4me et de ses partisans. Basile, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Ancyre, las d&#039;Aius et de ses sophismes, convoqua un synode \u00e0 Ancyre au printemps 358 et \u00e9crivit, au nom de ce synode, une lettre de paix adress\u00e9e \u00e0 tous les \u00e9v\u00eaques du monde. Il \u00e9crivit ensuite de nouveau, cette fois en son nom propre et au nom de Georges, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Laodic\u00e9e.<\/p>\n<p>Ces deux lettres r\u00e9v\u00e8lent que les P\u00e8res r\u00e9unis \u00e0 Ancyre ont condamn\u00e9 la doctrine de la diff\u00e9rence d&#039;essence, affirm\u00e9 la divinit\u00e9 du Fils et se sont distanci\u00e9s de la doctrine de l&#039;\u00e9galit\u00e9 d&#039;essence par crainte de tomber dans l&#039;h\u00e9r\u00e9sie de Paul de Samosate, pr\u00e9f\u00e9rant \u00e0 la place la doctrine de la similitude d&#039;essence (Homo).<span style=\"color: #ff0000;\">i<\/span>ousion.<\/p>\n<p>Basile, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Ancyre, Eustathe, \u00e9v\u00eaque de S\u00e9baste, et Elf\u00e8s, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Cyzique, port\u00e8rent les d\u00e9crets du synode d&#039;Ancyre \u00e0 Constance \u00e0 Sirmium. Plusieurs \u00e9v\u00eaques de Gaule et d&#039;Afrique rejet\u00e8rent les enseignements d&#039;\u00c9gius et d&#039;Eun\u00f4me. Constance soutint la position des \u00e9v\u00eaques d&#039;Ancyre et \u00e9crivit aux Antiochiens pour nier avoir nomm\u00e9 Eudoxe comme leur \u00e9v\u00eaque. Il les mit en garde contre ceux qui changeaient de dioc\u00e8se pour accro\u00eetre leurs revenus et contre les philosophes qui se livraient \u00e0 l&#039;hypocrisie et \u00e0 l&#039;h\u00e9r\u00e9sie pour tromper le peuple. L&#039;empereur rappela aux Antiochiens ce qu&#039;il leur avait enseign\u00e9 sur la doctrine, expliquant que le Sauveur est le Fils de Dieu et qu&#039;il est en essence identique au P\u00e8re. Saisissant cette occasion, Basile obtint un d\u00e9cret imp\u00e9rial exilant Eudoxe, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Antioche, en Arm\u00e9nie, \u00c9gius en Papouasie et emprisonnant Eunome \u00e0 Ancyre.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Demande de r\u00e9union :<\/strong><\/span> (359) Basile souhaitait convoquer un concile \u0153cum\u00e9nique pour aborder la question de la foi et \u00e9tablir une position d\u00e9finitive \u00e0 ce sujet. Il voulait que les \u00e9v\u00eaques du monde entier se r\u00e9unissent \u00e0 Nic\u00e9e pour la seconde fois. Cependant, le souvenir des luttes qui avaient marqu\u00e9 le concile de Nic\u00e9e exigeait que Nic\u00e9e soit remplac\u00e9e par un autre lieu. Basile proposa Nicom\u00e9die, et l&#039;empereur y consentit. Malheureusement, un tremblement de terre d\u00e9truisit la ville le 24 ao\u00fbt 358. L&#039;empereur d\u00e9cida alors de consulter individuellement les \u00e9v\u00eaques quant au lieu du concile. Il leur \u00e9crivit, et les consultations furent longues. Basile retourna dans son dioc\u00e8se. Certains membres du clerg\u00e9 arien profit\u00e8rent de son absence de la cour et charg\u00e8rent deux ariens \u00e9minents de se rendre \u00e0 Sirmium et de contacter Constance.<\/p>\n<p>Narcisse, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Banias, et P\u00e9trophilus, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Bethsan, \u00e9taient les deux \u00e9v\u00eaques en question. Craignant que leurs fid\u00e8les et partisans ne constituent pas la majorit\u00e9 au sein d&#039;un concile \u0153cum\u00e9nique r\u00e9unissant des \u00e9v\u00eaques d&#039;Orient et d&#039;Occident \u2013 ayant tous deux particip\u00e9 au concile de Nic\u00e9e \u2013, ils expliqu\u00e8rent \u00e0 l&#039;empereur la difficult\u00e9 de communication entre les \u00e9v\u00eaques d&#039;Orient et d&#039;Occident, due \u00e0 la diff\u00e9rence entre le grec et le latin. Ils soulign\u00e8rent \u00e9galement le co\u00fbt consid\u00e9rable du transport des \u00e9v\u00eaques occidentaux en Orient. Ils propos\u00e8rent la tenue simultan\u00e9e de deux conciles\u00a0: l&#039;un \u00e0 Rimini, sur la c\u00f4te adriatique, et l&#039;autre \u00e0 S\u00e9leucie, en Assyrie, pr\u00e8s de la c\u00f4te cilicienne.<\/p>\n<p>L&#039;empereur accepta leur proposition et demanda \u00e0 Marc, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Arsuz, alors \u00e0 Sirmium, de r\u00e9diger un nouveau credo \u00e0 pr\u00e9senter aux \u00e9v\u00eaques des deux synodes. Marc r\u00e9digea ce credo, qui devint plus tard le \u201c\u00a0Credo dat\u00e9\u00a0\u201d, car il y mentionnait l&#039;approbation de Constance et en pr\u00e9cisait l&#039;ann\u00e9e, le mois et le jour. Le \u201d\u00a0Credo dat\u00e9\u00a0\u201d exprime la consubstantialit\u00e9 (Omoios) en termes vagues et affirme que \u201c\u00a0Christ est le Fils de Dieu, engendr\u00e9 avant tous les si\u00e8cles et identique au P\u00e8re en toutes choses, comme il est \u00e9crit dans les Saintes \u00c9critures\u00a0\u201d. Ce credo est remarquable par la premi\u00e8re mention de la descente du Seigneur aux enfers. L&#039;empereur exigea des synodes qu&#039;ils examinent le \u201c\u00a0Credo dat\u00e9\u00a0\u201d et qu&#039;ils envoient deux d\u00e9l\u00e9gations porteuses des avis des \u00e9v\u00eaques r\u00e9unis.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Complexe de rim\u00e8ne :<\/span><\/strong> Quatre cents \u00e9v\u00eaques se r\u00e9unirent \u00e0 Rimini. La plupart rejet\u00e8rent la Constitution dat\u00e9e et d\u00e9fendirent le Credo de Nic\u00e9e, excommuniant plusieurs \u00e9v\u00eaques dissidents. Deux d\u00e9l\u00e9gations se rendirent \u00e0 Constantinople, l&#039;une repr\u00e9sentant l&#039;\u00e9crasante majorit\u00e9 et l&#039;autre les dissidents. L&#039;empereur autorisa la d\u00e9l\u00e9gation minoritaire \u00e0 compara\u00eetre devant lui, mais refusa d&#039;\u00e9couter la d\u00e9l\u00e9gation majoritaire. Les Ariens encercl\u00e8rent alors cette derni\u00e8re et persuad\u00e8rent son chef, et la majorit\u00e9 accepta de supprimer la mention \u201c\u00a0en toutes choses\u00a0\u201d de la ressemblance du Fils avec le P\u00e8re. Ils adopt\u00e8rent la Constitution dat\u00e9e et sign\u00e8rent un protocole en ce sens le 10 octobre 359.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Complexe salafiste :<\/span><\/strong> Le synode d&#039;Orient commen\u00e7a ses travaux \u00e0 S\u00e9leucie le 27 septembre 359. Il r\u00e9unissait plus de 150 \u00e9v\u00eaques. Parmi ses membres les plus \u00e9minents figuraient Basile, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Ancyre\u00a0; Mac\u00e9donius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Constantinople\u00a0; \u00c9l\u00e9usius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Cyzique\u00a0; Silvain, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Tarse\u00a0; Marc, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Arse (auteur de la constitution en question)\u00a0; Cyrille, \u00e9v\u00eaque de J\u00e9rusalem\u00a0; Sophronius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Pomp\u00e9ipolis\u00a0; Georges, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Alexandrie\u00a0; Eudoxe, ancien \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Antioche\u00a0; et Acace, \u00e9v\u00eaque de C\u00e9sar\u00e9e de Palestine. La d\u00e9l\u00e9gation antiochienne \u00e9tait compos\u00e9e de Marc, Acace, Auranius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Tyr, et de 17 autres \u00e9v\u00eaques, dont quatre repr\u00e9sentaient les dioc\u00e8ses d&#039;Arabie.<\/p>\n<p>Silvain proposa d&#039;adopter la Constitution antiochienne de \u201c\u00a0Cons\u00e9cration\u00a0\u201d, approuv\u00e9e par le synode d&#039;Antioche en 341. Cent cinq \u00e9v\u00eaques le soutinrent. Acacius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de C\u00e9sar\u00e9e, protesta et quitta le synode, suivi par dix-huit autres \u00e9v\u00eaques. Ces derniers se r\u00e9unirent s\u00e9par\u00e9ment et approuv\u00e8rent la \u201c\u00a0Constitution dat\u00e9e\u00a0\u201d, en adoucissant le texte et en \u00e9cartant toute divergence sur le fond. Acacius et son groupe revinrent au synode pour la troisi\u00e8me session et tent\u00e8rent de reconsid\u00e9rer la Constitution, mais la majorit\u00e9 refusa. Alvesius d\u00e9clara alors\u00a0: \u201c\u00a0Nous ne nous sommes pas r\u00e9unis pour \u00e9tablir une nouvelle constitution, mais pour r\u00e9affirmer les paroles des P\u00e8res.\u00a0\u201d L\u00e9onas, repr\u00e9sentant de l&#039;empereur, s&#039;emporta et quitta le synode, affirmant\u00a0: \u201c\u00a0Je suis venu repr\u00e9senter l&#039;empereur au sein d&#039;un synode uni et consensuel, et non au sein d&#039;un synode divis\u00e9 et schismatique.\u00a0\u201d Acacius et son groupe refus\u00e8rent ensuite de participer aux travaux du synode.<\/p>\n<p>La majorit\u00e9 poursuivit ses travaux, examinant le cas de Cyrille, \u00e9v\u00eaque de J\u00e9rusalem, et le diff\u00e9rend qui l&#039;opposait \u00e0 Acace, m\u00e9tropolite du dioc\u00e8se. Cyrille s&#039;\u00e9tait accroch\u00e9 \u00e0 certains privil\u00e8ges accord\u00e9s par la tradition \u00e0 la M\u00e8re des \u00c9glises, mais Acace s&#039;y opposait, affirmant \u00eatre le m\u00e9tropolite l\u00e9gitime. Cyrille avait vendu ses vases sacr\u00e9s pour nourrir les pauvres et les affam\u00e9s, mais Acace s&#039;y opposa et ordonna sa destitution. Le concile de S\u00e9leucie le r\u00e9tablit dans ses fonctions avec honneur. Ce concile excommunia \u00e9galement Georges, Eudoxe, Acace, Petrovilus, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Bethsan, et cinq autres. Anianus, pr\u00eatre d&#039;Antioche, fut \u00e9lev\u00e9 au si\u00e8ge apostolique, et les noms des d\u00e9l\u00e9gu\u00e9s charg\u00e9s de porter les d\u00e9cisions du concile \u00e0 l&#039;empereur Constance \u00e0 Constantinople furent annonc\u00e9s. Lorigius, duc d&#039;Assyrie, m\u00e9content de la d\u00e9cision concernant l&#039;\u00e9v\u00each\u00e9 d&#039;Antioche, fit arr\u00eater et exiler Anianus.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>Le concile de Constantinople :<\/strong><\/span> (360) Les repr\u00e9sentants des deux assembl\u00e9es se r\u00e9unirent \u00e0 Constantinople au d\u00e9but de l&#039;ann\u00e9e 360 et approuv\u00e8rent la \u201c\u00a0Constitution dat\u00e9e\u00a0\u201d amend\u00e9e. Ils affirm\u00e8rent la similitude de fond avec les textes originaux et rejet\u00e8rent les divergences. Ils interdirent l&#039;emploi des termes Ausia et Hypostsis, qui avaient suscit\u00e9 la controverse, et les remplac\u00e8rent par le mot Omoios. Ainsi, la Constitution demeura vague et ambigu\u00eb, sujette \u00e0 des interpr\u00e9tations parfois contradictoires.<\/p>\n<p>Les membres s&#039;en prirent ensuite aux individus, d\u00e9chu Aetius de son rang et l&#039;excommuni\u00e8rent. Ils le menac\u00e8rent d&#039;excommunication s&#039;il persistait dans sa position, interdirent la lecture de ses livres et ordonn\u00e8rent qu&#039;on les d\u00e9truise. Ils d\u00e9pos\u00e8rent \u00e9galement Mac\u00e9donius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Constantinople\u00a0; \u00c9l\u00e9usius, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Cyzique\u00a0; Basile, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Ancyre\u00a0; Silvain, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Tarse\u00a0; Cyrille, \u00e9v\u00eaque de J\u00e9rusalem\u00a0; et d&#039;autres encore.<\/p>\n<p>Le concile \u00e9crivit \u00e0 tous les \u00e9v\u00eaques du monde, les exhortant \u00e0 approuver le texte de la nouvelle constitution. Il mena\u00e7a d&#039;exil les autorit\u00e9s s\u00e9culi\u00e8res en cas de refus. Un grand nombre d&#039;\u00e9v\u00eaques, tant en Occident qu&#039;en Orient, approuv\u00e8rent, tandis que d&#039;autres refus\u00e8rent. Athanase, qui conservait une influence consid\u00e9rable en \u00c9gypte, encouragea les \u00e9v\u00eaques d&#039;\u00c9gypte et de Libye \u00e0 d\u00e9fendre le Credo de Nic\u00e9e, ce qu&#039;ils firent. La lettre qui lui est attribu\u00e9e date probablement de cette occasion, et pourrait remonter \u00e0 356.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\"><strong>M\u00e9l\u00e8ce, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Antioche :<\/strong><\/span> Les \u00e9v\u00eaques r\u00e9unis \u00e0 Constantinople install\u00e8rent Eudoxe, ancien \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Antioche, comme \u00e9v\u00eaque de Constantinople et d\u00e9clar\u00e8rent ill\u00e9gitime l&#039;\u00e9l\u00e9vation d&#039;Anianus au si\u00e8ge d&#039;Antioche. Acace, \u00e9v\u00eaque de C\u00e9sar\u00e9e en Palestine, et ses partisans \u00e9lurent M\u00e9l\u00e8ce comme \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Antioche. Ils sign\u00e8rent un document confirmant son \u00e9lection et le confi\u00e8rent \u00e0 Eus\u00e8be, \u00e9v\u00eaque de Samosate, afin qu&#039;il soit conserv\u00e9 en lieu s\u00fbr. M\u00e9l\u00e8ce \u00e9tait n\u00e9 \u00e0 M\u00e9lit\u00e8ne, en Arm\u00e9nie, et \u00e9tait r\u00e9put\u00e9 pour sa pi\u00e9t\u00e9, sa bont\u00e9, son amour et son int\u00e9grit\u00e9. Lorsque la communaut\u00e9 des croyants de S\u00e9baste, en Arm\u00e9nie, se fractura et se divisa, certains r\u00e9clam\u00e8rent la nomination de M\u00e9l\u00e8ce comme \u00e9v\u00eaque, contestant ainsi l&#039;\u00e9v\u00eaque en place, Eustathe. En raison des profondes dissensions et des troubles, M\u00e9l\u00e8ce ne put acc\u00e9der au si\u00e8ge de S\u00e9baste. Il se retira et s&#039;installa \u00e0 Alep. En 359, le synode de S\u00e9leucie se r\u00e9unit, Eustathe repr\u00e9sentant S\u00e9baste (Arm\u00e9nie), et la majorit\u00e9 des synodes se pronon\u00e7a en faveur du maintien de la constitution antiochienne. Quant \u00e0 M\u00e9l\u00e8ce, il accompagna Acace soit pendant le concile, soit peu apr\u00e8s.<\/p>\n<p>Il entra \u00e0 Antioche durant l&#039;hiver 360-361 et re\u00e7ut la crosse pastorale en pr\u00e9sence de l&#039;empereur Acace et de Georges, \u00e9v\u00eaque d&#039;Alexandrie. L&#039;empereur demanda aux trois \u00e9v\u00eaques de commenter le verset\u00a0: \u201c\u00a0Le Seigneur m&#039;a rappel\u00e9 \u00e0 lui avant le commencement de son \u0153uvre, avant m\u00eame qu&#039;il n&#039;ait commenc\u00e9 son minist\u00e8re\u00a0\u201d (Proverbes 8, 22). Ce faisant, il satisfit les orthodoxes mais irrita les ariens.<\/p>\n<p>Dans son ouvrage \u201c Le Schisme d&#039;Antioche \u201d, l&#039;\u00e9rudit Cavalera soutient que M\u00e9l\u00e8ce fut, du d\u00e9but \u00e0 la fin, un fervent chr\u00e9tien orthodoxe. En effet, M\u00e9l\u00e8ce \u00e9tait un proche collaborateur d&#039;Acace, et ce dernier, tout comme Georges, lui confia conjointement la charge pastorale. Socrate et \u00c9piphane confirment la relation de M\u00e9l\u00e8ce avec Acace. Basile, qui consid\u00e9rait M\u00e9l\u00e8ce comme un Nic\u00e9en \u00e0 part enti\u00e8re, se contenta peut-\u00eatre des confessions tardives de M\u00e9l\u00e8ce, ind\u00e9pendamment de ses d\u00e9clarations et actions ant\u00e9rieures. Les ariens surveillaient de pr\u00e8s chacun des faits et gestes de M\u00e9l\u00e8ce, protestant contre certaines de ses m\u00e9thodes administratives et exigeant sa destitution. Constance l&#039;exila en Arm\u00e9nie \u00e0 la fin du premier mois de son \u00e9piscopat. L&#039;arien Efusiu lui succ\u00e9da, apr\u00e8s avoir \u00e9t\u00e9 excommuni\u00e9 par Alexandre d&#039;Alexandrie et d\u00e9mis de ses fonctions eccl\u00e9siastiques. L&#039;arianisme connut un triomphe spectaculaire, et les \u00e9v\u00eaques de la plupart des grandes \u00c9glises d&#039;Orient et d&#039;Occident devinrent des ariens, extr\u00e9mistes ou mod\u00e9r\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"text-decoration: underline;\">Mort de Constance II :<\/span><\/strong> En 358, Shapur II de Perse avait franchi le Tigre avec une importante arm\u00e9e. Constance se trouvait encore \u00e0 Sirmium, occup\u00e9 \u00e0 r\u00e9gler des diff\u00e9rends doctrinaux. Il marcha sur Constantinople et y demeura tout l&#039;hiver 359-360. Au printemps 360, il se souleva pour affronter la menace perse. Shapur avan\u00e7ait et avait atteint la rive occidentale du Tigre, assi\u00e9geant la ville. Constance tenta de briser le si\u00e8ge, mais en vain. L&#039;hiver arriva, les combats cess\u00e8rent et Constance resta \u00e0 Antioche. Ses courtisans pressaient son cousin Julien de lui apporter le meilleur soutien possible pour r\u00e9sister aux Perses. On raconte que son cousin \u00e9tait dispos\u00e9 \u00e0 acc\u00e9der \u00e0 leur requ\u00eate, mais ses soldats se mutin\u00e8rent en signe de protestation et le proclam\u00e8rent empereur \u00e0 Paris en 360. Julien \u00e9crivit \u00e0 Constance pour lui demander de reconna\u00eetre les faits, mais Constance insista pour abdiquer. Julien fut alors contraint de faire marcher son arm\u00e9e vers l&#039;est. Constance marcha d&#039;Antioche \u00e0 Constantinople, puis vers l&#039;ouest pour affronter son rival. Cependant, il tomba malade alors qu&#039;il se trouvait encore \u00e0 Tarse. Sa vie \u00e9tait en grand danger\u00a0; il fut donc baptis\u00e9 par Efus et mourut \u00e0 une journ\u00e9e de marche de Tarse, le 3 novembre 361. Le plus remarquable \u00e0 son sujet est que, sur son lit de mort, il l\u00e9gua son testament \u00e0 Julien lui-m\u00eame, comme son
