The comment of one of the Russian fathers upon a question I asked regarding Fr. Bassilios and the request of making him a saint. I hope all will understand that I do praise Fr. Bassilios, but we must respect the Church Synod and Her actions, and control our feelings for the Glory of God. Amen
Popular veneration is the "first stage" of recognizing someone as a saint. If this veneration is sustained then
perhaps 5 or 10 years on down the road, the synod may take note of it and move to formalize that veneration. Accounts of miracles will be collected, a life will be written and so on. If the synod decides to recognize this person as a saint, then they will commission a service to be written (which may or may not utilize any of the popular troparia that pop up), an icon will be commissioned (which may or may not reflect the popular images), the relics will be brought out and at some point a service will be served at which the "last pannykhida" will be said followed by the Vigil and Liturgy in the new saints honor. In Matins at the polyeleos the new icon is unveiled and the magnification is sung to the new saint and all present come up to venerate him for the first time.
All the "popular veneration" that pops up now may or may not be the first indication of whether this monk will be proclaimed a saint - time will tell.
Just being killed - even being killed in the process of doing a good deed - doesn't make one automatically a saint.
