هوى - يهوى - أهو " هوى فلأنُ فلاناً : أحبه . فالهوى هو العشق ،
أو الميل الشديد إلى الشيء خيراً كان أم شرّاً .
ولكن يغلب استعمالها في الميل إلى ما يستلذ المرء من الشهوات ،
فيقال للذم : " فلان اتبع هواه " أي فعل ما يشتهيه . والجمع " أهواء " .
ويقول الحكيم : " الرب لا يجيع نفس الصديق ، ولكنه يدفع هوى الأشرار " ( أم 10 : 2و3 ، انظر أيضاً مي 7 : 3 ) .
كما يقول : " الصبى المطلق إلى هواه ، يخجل أمه " ( أم 29 : 15 ) .
ويقول الرسول بولس : " أميتوا أعضاءكم التى على الأرض : الزنا ، النجاسة ، الهوى ، الشهوة الردية ، الطمع الذي هو عبادة أوثان "

كما يوصي المؤمنين فى تسالونيكى :
" أن يعرف كل واحد منكم أن يقتني إناءه ( جسده ) بقداسة وكرامة ، لا في هوي شهوة كالأمم الذين لا يعرفون الله " ( 1 تس 4 : 5 ) ، أى " لا ينساق للشهوة الجامحة " ( انظر كتاب الحياة ) .
ويقول الرسول بولس عن الأمم : لأنهم " عبدوا المخلوق دون الخالق ... لذلك أسلمهم الله إلى أهواء الهوان " ( رو 1 : 26 ) ،
أى للشهوات الدنيئة التى تجلب الخزي والهوان ( انظر أيضا رو 7 : 5 ) .
