Written by Cyril of Alexandria

NOTE: The present epistle, sent from Cyril to John of Antioch in 433, respresents the restoration of communion between their churches after a schism which had arisen following the council at Ephesus. It is known today most often as the 'Formula of Union'. Concerning it, the fathers of the council at Chalcedon in 451 wrote: '[This Council] has accepted the synodical letters of the blessed Cyril, pastor of the church in Alexandria, to Nestorius and to the Orientals, as being well-suited to refuting Nestorius's mad folly and to providing an interpretation for those who in their religious zeal might desire understanding of the saving creed.'
