St. Athanasius ca. 297-373 A.D
St. Athanasius is one of the greatest of the Church Fathers.
His life was spent defending Nicene Orthodoxy against the onslaught of the Arian heresy. The saying "Athanasius contra mundum" is apt, for he underwent numerous exiles for his unwavering opposition to the official Arian position of the governing authorities. His stubborn persistence became legendary, one anecdote recounts how he once grabbed the reigns of Emperor Constantine's horse and refused to let go until the ruler agreed with him on a theological point. Athanasius is the author of foundational texts of Orthodox theology, arguably the most important of which is the De Incarnatione Verbi Dei ("On the Incarnation of the Word")
