كان غفرائيل رئيس اساقفة صربيا في القرن السابع عشر، كان شعبه في ضيق عظيم بسبب الاستعمار التركي. اقتصاد البلد كان منهارًا. حاول ان يستنهض همة شعبه. اضطرته الحاجة الى التماس العون من روسيا ورومانيا. أذن له الاتراك بالسفر وفي نيتهم ان يضعوا يدهم على الكنيسة عبر احد الاكليريكيين الوصوليين، اسمه مكسيموس.
طالت غيبة غفرائيل، ولم عاد وجد أن مكسيموس أعلن نفسه رئيس اساقفة بدلاً منه. لجأ الى المحاكم ولجأ الى الشعب ولكن على غير طائل. اتهمه مكسيموس لدى الاتراك بإثارة الشعب ضدهم. اليهود قالوا انه هدى بعضًا منهم الى المسيحية وانه سعى ليعمل الشيء نفسه ببعض المسلمين. اتهم بالخيانة. أودعه الاتراك السجن. عرضوا إطلاق سراحه إن قبل الإسلام فلم يقبل. بقي أمينًا لمسيحه وكنيسته. جرى شنقه في بروسا في 13 كانون الاول من السنة 1659.
