ولد في غابروفو في مقاطعة تيرنوفو في بلغاريا. تأجج فيه الشوق إلى حياة الرهبنة، فذهب إلى الجبل المقدس وترهب في دير خلندار، الدير الصربي، في جبل آثوس. أرسل الى بلغاريا كمدبر لأحد الاديار، إلى احد الأتراك كان عليه دين للدير، فطلب الاب داماسكينوس من التركي المال فلم يدفعه.
واذ اراد ان يتخلص من الاب، أرسل الى المكان الذي كان الأب يقيم فيه، امرأة تركية مسلمة. ثم داهم المكان مع بعض رفاقه وادعوا انه على علاقة مريبة.
قبضوا عليه واستاقوه أمام القاضي وتمكنوا من انتزاع حكم بالإعدام عليه شنقاً. في الطريق الى المشنقة دعوه الى نبذ مسيحيته وقبول الإسلام فيخلّص نفسه من الموت، ولكنه أبى ورفض أن ينكر المسيح. وكان قبل أن يكبلوا يده وراء ظهره صلى ورسم إشارة الصليب، بعد ذلك شنقوه. كان ذلك في السادس عشر من كانون الثاني من العام 1771م.
