القديس يوحنا الشهيد ولد في إحدى قرى جزيرة تاسوس (اليونان) في العام 1638م. أرسله ذووه الى القسطنطينية ليعمل لدى خيّاط مسيحي. كان عمره أربعة عشر عاماً.
أرسله الخيّاط، مرة، ليشتري بعض الأقمشة من عند تاجر يهودي. كان الوقت ظهراً والمؤذّن يدعو المسلمين الى الصلاة. دخل يوحنا في جدال حام مع التاجر اليهودي بشأن ثمن البضاعة. فجأة، وقد امتلأ اليهودي غيظاً، نادى المسلمين بأعلى صوته: “أما تسمعون ما يكيله هذا السوقيّ من شتائم لإيمانكم ومقدار سخريته من صلاتكم؟”.
فاهتاج المسلمون وهجموا على الفتى وانهالوا عليه ضرباً ثم جرّوه أمام القاضي، فألفاه حدثاً فاقترح عليه ان ينسى ما يتهمه القوم به مقابل ان يشهر إسلامه. فأبى وتمسّك، بصلابة، بالإيمان بالرب يسوع المسيح.
حكم عليه القاضي بقطع الرأس. حاول الجلاّدون إرهابه أولاً عسى ان يستسلم فلم يرهب. فلمّا يئسوا منه قتلوه. وكان ذلك في العشرين من كانون الاول العام 1652 ميلادي، وهو نفس اليوم الذي تُعيد فيه الكنيسة للقديس يوحنا الشهيد الجديد
