Saint Naum, the miracle worker

Saint Naum, the miracle workerNaum the Wonderworker or Naum of Preslav, whose Bulgarian name is Naum Преславски. His feast day is December 23. Naum lived during the reign of Michael the Roman king, son of Theophilus the Rebel, in the year 842 AD, the time when Saints Cyril, Methodius and Clement, equal to the apostles, were preaching the Gospel of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ in Bulgaria.

Then Saint Naum went to Rome, because in Bulgaria they needed a translation of the Greek text into Bulgarian to preach it, and while he was in Rome he performed so many miracles that one of those who were healed said: “As soon as the saints looked into my eyes I was freed from diseases.” When he returned he went directly to the Germans to guide them to the right faith because many heresies had spread among the Germans, but they put him in prison after beating and torturing him. In prison the saints did not stop praying, so an earthquake happened that destroyed the prison and the prison doors were opened to the saints. Then the saints came out and began to walk in the street with joy, as the apostles did. Then he returned to Bulgaria and King Michael received them and sent them to preach the Gospel in the neighboring countries with Saint Clement. After preaching he lived for a short time in a monastery, which later bore the name of Naum, praying to the Lord. He fell asleep in the Lord and left behind him endless miracles.

The reference for the biography of the saint is what was written by Saint Nicodemus the Athonite.

The Church commemorates him on December 23.

Through the intercession of our father Saint Naum, the wonder worker, and through the intercessions of all the saints, O Lord Jesus Christ our God, have mercy on us and save us. Amen.
