كان يوحنا من بلدة اسمها سوما في بلغاريا. هناك امتهن الصياغة. كان وسيمًا وفاضلا جدًا. عبْر الشارع من محل عمله كانت تعيش عائلة مسلمة ولها فتاة عزباء. هذه وقعت في هيام يوحنا لكنه لم يبادلها الشعور بالحب وصدّها حين تودّدت اليه. شعرت الصبية بالمهانة واتهمت يوحنا لدى السلطات بأنه يتحرش بها.
أُوقف الشاب أمام القاضي بين أن يصير مسلمًا ويتزوج الفتاة او يواجه الموت. جواب يوحنا، كان انه يفضل الموت على أن يكفر بإيمانه بالرب يسوع المسيح. سلّموه للتعذيب وضربوه ضربًا موجعًا وسجنوه. وفي السجن كانوا، مرة بعد مرة، يعلقونه في السقف ثم يتركونه يسقط على الأرض فجأة.
من جهة أخرى، حاولوا، في بعض المناسبات، أن يستميلوه بالكلام الملق والوعود والهدايا، ولكن على غير طائل. لم يكن يوحنا ليخون الرب يسوع. بقي صامدًا لا يتزحزح. تفننوا في تعذيبه فلم يكن ما ينفع في كسر تصميمه. أخيرًا حكموا عليه بالموت وقطعوا رأسه. كان ذلك في 14 أيار سنة 1802م.
