ولد القديس بنايوتيس في دمشق إلا أننا لا نعرف تاريخ ميلاده. كان موظفًا عند عثمان أفندي رئيس ديوان والي دمشق سليمان باشا، الذي امتدت ولايته لتشمل فلسطين أيضا. فلما حدث أن انتقل عثمان إلى القدس في مهمة أُوكلت إليه، أخذ معه بنايوتيس. وإذ حدث يومًا أن رافقه إلى مسجد عمر دخل إلى الداخل وهو لا يدري أن المكان محظر على غير المسلمين، تحت طائلة الموت.
بعد ذلك بوقت قصير، وفيما كان عثمان أفندي غائبًا، انتهز أحد خدامه، من الذين حسدوا بنايوتيس على مكانته. فجرّه جرًا إلى المسجد حيث أوقف واستيق وسط جلبة كبيرة إلى المحكمة. هناك عُرض عليه الإسلام فرد العرض بلهجة واثقة لا تردد فيها. فأخذوه إلى بوابة داود حيث عراه الجند وكسروا ذراعه وأصابع يده الأخرى آملين في إخضاعه. لكنه صرخ في وجوههم: “لست أخشاكم. أنا مسيحي. المسيح قام”. ثم سقط على ركبتيه ليصلي، فلما نهض هتف هتاف النصرة: “المسيح قام”. إلا أن أحد الجنود قطع له رأسه، وذلك في الخامس من نيسان سنة 1820م، وكان عمره يومذاك خمسة وعشرين ربيعًا. تعيد له الكنيسة في الخامس من نيسان.
