Apamea is a Syrian town in the Orontes Valley, now known as Qalaat al-Madiq. Maurice was a military leader there and preached Christianity among his soldiers. The pagans denounced him, so he and seventy of his soldiers were arrested. They were interrogated and their faith in Christ was revealed. The governors tried to win them over with praise and threats, but failed. The executioners stripped them of their clothes and tied them to tree trunks. They smeared them with honey and left them to be eaten by mosquitoes and wasps. They spent ten days in bitter torture and then gave up their spirits. The Christians took their bodies and buried them secretly.
