وعاد والنس إلى القسطنطينية في أواخر السنة 369 وتوفي افذوكسيوس بعد ذلك بقليل. فخسرت الكنيسة أباً معتدلاً حكيماً واختلف أبناء كنيسة القسطنطينية في أمر الأسقف الجديد خليفة افذوكسيوس فأسرع الأرثوذكسيون إلى تأييد افاغريوس ونادى أصحاب القول بالدستور المؤرخ بذيموفيلوس. فاحتج الأرثوذكسيون وأرسلوا وفداً إلى والنس مؤلفاً من أربعة وثماني اكليريكياً يطالبون بالاعتراف بايفاغريوس فغضب والنس وأمر بإعدام الوفد. فألقي القبض عليهم وأبعدوا على قوارب في مياه البوسفور وأحرقو وأحرق بعضهم. ودخلت الكنيسة في دور من الاضطهاد دام طويلاً. فطُرِد الأرثوذكسيون وسلمت كنائسهم إلى أصحاب القول بالدستور المؤرخ. وأُكره الآباء إكراهاً على القول بهذا الدستور وصودرت الأملاك والأوقاف ونفي الأساقفة المؤمنون وكفَّ الجيش عن محاربة الفرس والبرابرة ودنَّس الكنائس والمذابح. وعمّ اضطهاد والنس جميع الولايات الخاضعة له.
وأطل والنس في ربيع 372 على سورية وأقام فيها حتى وفاته. فنفى ملاتيوس الجليل وبيلاجيوس اللاذقية وبرسا الرها وإبراهيم بنّس وسجن افسابيوس سميساط. ونشط الكاهنان الأنطاكيان افلوغيوس وبروتوجنس لرعاية الأرثوذكسيين في أنطاكية. فأمر الأمبراطور بنفيهما إلى صعيد مصر. وطرد الأرثوذكسيين من كنائسهم وسلّمها لافظويوس وأتباعه. فاضطر المؤمنون أن ينطلقوا إلى الحقول للصلاة والعبادة. ويؤكد ثيودوريطس المؤرخ أن الأمبراطور أمر بإغراق عدد كبير من المؤمنين في العاصي.
