تأسست كنيسة بلغاريا على يد القديسان كيرلس و مثذوس وكانت تابعة روحيا إلى البطريركية المسكونية إلى عام 1945 حيث أصبحت مستقلة وفي عام 1953 أرتقت إلى بطريركية وأول بطريرك كان كيرلوس. وفي 4 يوليو من عام 1974 خلفه البطريرك الحالي مكسموس. وتشمل اليوم البطريركية بلغاريا على 26 أسقف و1350 كاهن و123 دير. عدد رعيتها نحو 8 مليون. وقد نشب على اثر تبشير بلغاريا خلافاً بين القسطنطينية وروما إذ قامت الثانية بعد أن كانت القسطنطينية بالتبشير في بلغاريا بإرسال مبشرين من الكنيسة الرومية محاولةً منها لضم بلغاريا إلى نفوذ الكرسي الباباوي. معطياً البابا الحق للمبشرين أن يبشروا بعقيدة “الانبثاق من الآب والابن”. وللعودة أكثر لهذا الموضوع راجع الموضوع التالي: فوتيوس بطريركاً مسكونياً، في قسم التاريخ الكنسي.
