Sincletiki, the righteous saint

Saint Sincletiki the righteous

Saint Sincletiki the righteousHer identity and upbringing: She is originally from Macedonia, from a noble and pious family. Her parents were devout believers. To strengthen their piety, they moved to Alexandria after they gained a reputation for piety among the people there.

In her youth, Sincletiki enjoyed stunning beauty, so young men approached her seeking her affection. Her parents urged her to get married, but she did not want to. Because she had put in her heart to preserve her virginity as a virgin for Christ. When her parents realized that her heart was inclined from marriage to the better, angelic life, they stopped worrying her and entrusted her to God’s will. Since then, she began to avoid mingling with people and restrict herself more, focusing rather on practicing discipline for God’s sake and prayer.

After her parents died, she and her sister, who shared her concern for holiness, moved to a cemetery near the city, where she resided in the manner of Saint Anthony the Great.

The fame of Saint Sankletiki spread, so much so that virgins came to her from every direction, either to take her as a role model or to benefit from her saving advice. She appeared among women like Antony the Great among men, and became a role model for the female sex in mortifying the flesh and being patient in the face of adversity.

Sincletiki persevered in practicing virtue and good deeds until the age of eighty, when the Lord God allowed Satan to abuse her as he had abused righteous Job. Job's torments lasted thirty-five years, while Sincletiki's torments lasted three and a half years, and it was said that Job was just because they were of a high degree of intensity and continuity. Satan ignited a fire in the internal organs of the saint’s body, especially the lungs, accompanied by a severe fever that consumed her as an invisible coolant without calming her, neither at night nor during the day.

Satan's fight against her did not stop, because she did not stop offering praise and thanks to God. So he struck her in the throat, and the fountain of living water flowing from her mouth was silenced. This did not keep the virgins away from her. Because the sight of the saint and her high spirit were enough to make them steadfast. Her wounds became a saving medicine for their souls.

Finally, after sleep left her and it was impossible for her to eat due to the pain, she struck one of her molars and caused an infection in her mouth. The end of her struggles and the hour of victory appeared on the horizon, and the Lord God consoled her with the appearance of angels and holy virgins who invited her to take them to heaven. She also saw the inexpressible divine light and enjoyed a taste of the paradise to which she was heading. When she returned to herself, she spoke and provided the virgins with her instructions, urging them to strive courageously and not to surrender to weakness. Then she added that she would leave them after three days, and set for them the hour of her departure. When the hour approached, the angels carried her to the Lord God. This was the year 350.

The church celebrates it on January 5

From her sayings:

  • Extremism is always corrupting.
  • Why do you hate your sorrows? It is not he who wronged you, but Satan. You are called to hate the disease, not the patient.
  • When you are in a shared monastery, let us prioritize obedience over asceticism. Because this teaches haughtiness and humility.
