Eighth Sermon: The Epistle to the Romans - Chapter Three: 9-31

The Sacrament of Baptism and the Baptist Community

Chapter Twenty-Nine - Orthodox Virtues

Man’s true nature and true life do not emanate from earthly data, but from the Triune God Himself, because man is the image of God. If we want to seek man’s true life, we must draw near to God and savor His life. Only life close to God is “natural,” that is, life that corresponds to man’s true nature. As for distance from God, it is “unnatural.”

Chapter Twenty-Six - Our True Homeland

Death is the result of the new state into which man passed after the fall, and its cause is sin. Thus it became man's enemy. But this life is only an inn. We enter it and spend our whole present life in it. But we strive to leave it with good hope. We must not leave here anything that we might miss there.

Hippolytus the Martyr, Bishop of Rome

Chapter Fifteen - The position of the laity in the Church

The Christian is a priest in body and in his entire being. He is called to offer himself and all his actions as a sacrifice to God, along with all of creation. The Christian's personal life becomes a witness to God's presence and work within him, so that anyone who observes his way of life concludes that Christ lives in him, and that he is not an ordinary person, but a citizen of the Kingdom of God. In this way, his actions and his entire life become a continuous divine service, regaining the original meaning they held in God's Paradise.

Chapter Thirteen - The Holy Deposit of the Church

The truth of salvation in Christ is not a rigid letter that can be preserved in a book. It is a treasure that the Lord gave to the apostles so that their union would be the sure guarantee of their possession of the truth of salvation. The apostles passed this treasure on to the bishops so that they might complete the mission, in their union with the Church - the Body of Christ, where the Holy Spirit works. In doing so, they do not express their own opinion, but the will of the Holy Spirit who dwells in the Church.

Chapter Eight - The Renaissance

We have seen that the nature of man itself was transformed, as a result of the fall. Consequently, Adam passed on to his descendants a heavy legacy, for he bequeathed to them a sick and worn-out nature, whose lot is death and corruption. So how can the descendants of Adam, that is, all of humanity, be saved?

Villarita, Mother, Abbess

The Annunciation Monastery in Ufa is one of the most famous monasteries due to the high spiritual status of its nuns. This was the fruit of its founder, Mother Philaret, who was in turn a disciple of St. Seraphim of Sarov and the great Elder Philaret. Her biography is contained in the Glinks Patericon, from which this brief biography is taken.

Chapter Two - Knowing the Truth

By knowing God, we do not mean understanding Him logically, but rather a personal encounter with Him. When a person surrenders completely to God, desires to meet Him, and yearns for Him, and after passing through the dark cloud of ignorance, God comes to him, illuminates everything around him, and reveals Himself to him.
