كان شماس القديس الشهيد عبدا الفارسي (5 أيلول) في بلاد فارس (إيران). قضى في ايام الملك يزدجرد الاول (399-420). قبض عليه جنود الملك بعدما صدر أمر بدك الكنائس والأديرة وبإزالة معالم العبادة المسيحية وإحالة الكهنة والشمامسة ورؤساء الأديرة الى المحاكمة ألقي بنيامين في السجن سنتين.
تدخل الامبراطور ثيودوسيوس الصغير لدى ملك الفرس بشأنه فأعفى عنه شرط أن يتوقف عن كل عمل تبشيري. جواب بنيامين كان دونما تردد: “ولكن، من غير الممكن أن أتوقف عن نشر نور معرفة الله بين القائمين في الظلام لئلا أحسب كالعبد الذي أخفى وزنة معلّمه في الارض فألقي في الظلمة البرانية”.
لم يفهم الملك الفارسي من اعتراض بنيامين شيئا فأطلق سراحه. وتابع بنيامين الكرازة بالانجيل كأن شيئا لم يكن، وداوم على ذلك بضع سنوات، الى أن انتهى خبره الى الملك من جديد فألقى القبض عليه وأمره أن ينكر المسيح فأجاب: “اذا كان من يكفر بملكك او يحتقره التماسا لملك غيرك يستحق الموت جزاء، فكم يكون فظيعا عقاب من يتخلى عن الملك الأزلي وخالق الكل ليعبد الخليقة الفانية؟”.
غضب الملك لجوابه غضبا شديدا وأسلمه للمعذبين فقضى تحت التعذيب. وكان ذلك في الثالث عشر من تشرين الاول.
