أصبح جناديوس بطريرك على القسطنطينية العام 458، عرف بتقواه واستقامته. اهتم بضبط شؤون الكهنة بعدما كانت السيمونية -تجارة السيامات الكهنوتية- قد تفشت. عقد لذلك مجمعا في القسطنطينية بين العامين 458 و459. له مؤلف في موضوع السيمونية هو الوحيد المحفوظ بكامله من كتاباته. هو الذي فرض الاحد كيوم عطلة.
اهتم بالمحافظة على التوازن في العلاقة بين الكنيسة والسلطة المدنية. مدافع قوي عن الإيمان المسيحي. له مؤلفات عديدة.اهتم بصورة خاصة بدارسة الكتاب المقدس. كتابته تدل على انه كان ينتمي إلى المدرسة الكتابية الانطاكية.
